Messiaen worked on this composition around 1960. The music is based on bird calls, and was sketched out on a number of different manuscripts. A previous edition was based on only one of these manuscripts -- this edition refers to all the available sources. The two scores included in this edition contain two different completed versions of the music. The separate commentary includes a foreword, postludes, notes, and bibliography, all in both French and English. It also includes color photos of the various birds whose songs are referenced in the music.
