Schnittke composed his Violin Sonata No. 1 in 1963, and arranged it for violin and chamber orchestra in 1968. This volume is based primarily on the first edition of the version for chamber orchestra, published by Sikorski in 1971. That edition was a facsmile of the autograph score.
