Debussy originally composed this work in 1904 for harp and string orchestra, at the request of Gustav Lyon, the head of the Pleyel Company who wanted music for its new chromatic harp. Henriette Renié created a version for solo pedal harp in 1910. This edition combines aspects of the original version with Renié's transcription to create a version best suited to current standards of harp notation.
