This edition faithfully transcribes the manuscript copy made by Anna Magdalena (Bach’s second wife) and allows the interpreter to express his own choice of articulation, phrasing, and pulsative accentuation. The transcription of the Suites encompasses the entire range of the French horn. These Suites offer an extensive opportunity to improvise with the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and the application of tone quality and dynamics. Trumpet colleagues have endorsed the Bach transcriptions as an ideal challenge for the trumpet as well, with occasional octave jumps to accommodate the trumpet range. The Bach Suites are a lifelong challenge both as studies and concert pieces.
