Shostakovich's interest in Chekov's story The Black Monk occupied much of his life. In 1972, Shostakovich discovered Braga's Serenata on the same subject, and transcribed it for mezzo, violin and piano. This first edition contains an introduction in Russian and English by Olga Digonskaya, and facsimiles.
