This concerto was originally conceived as a Sonata for Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano. At the suggestion of Warren Deck, the accompaniment was orchestrated and certain changes made to convert the work into a concerto, to be used as a contest piece for low brass held at the Julliard School, fall 98.
