Composer of the Month June 2024: Sunbin Clara Kim

Sunbin KimSunbin Clara Kim is a Korean-born composer based in New York. Clara Kim's compositions have been performed in concerts and festivals including the Aspen Summer Music Festival and School and the Zodiac Music Festival (France). She performed her own "Fantasy-Concerto" with the American Symphony Orchestra. Her works have been commissioned and performed in the United States and Europe by ensembles such as New Juilliard Chamber Ensemble and the Da Capo Chamber Players. She has received numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Scholarship (2018), the Gina Rapp String Quartet Competition (2017), the New Juilliard Chamber Ensemble Competition (2017), seven ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and the North/South Consonance Award. Clara was awarded bachelor's degrees in music composition and physics from Bard College, her Master of Musical Arts degree in composition from The Juilliard School, and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from Manhattan School of Music. Clara’s goal in composing is to create philosophical works that challenge preconceptions about art music, aesthetics, and the social norms within. To this end, her most recent works feature collaging of different styles, particularly those unexplored in the Western canon. Her works are published by American Composers Alliance.
