Composer of the Month September 2023: Alice Gomez
Alice Gomez’s compositions capture the awe-inspiring spirit of ethnicity in the language of contemporary music. Her first orchestral composition, ‘Primitive Echoes’, premiered in November 1992. ‘Primitive Echoes’ is a Native American inspired Concerto for Timpani and Chamber Orchestra, and was the catalyst for Gomez’s career as a symphonic composer. In 1993, she received a three-year award from Meet the Composer, Inc., to serve as Composer in Residence for The San Antonio Symphony and The Guadalupe Dance Company. She composed several Central American inspired works with the intent of drawing in new symphony audience members from San Antonio’s largely Latino community. After completing a very successful residency, Gomez was able to sustain a steady influx of commissions for new works, while building an international reputation as one of the leading Latina composers of concert music. Alice Gomez has received numerous Composer’s Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Her music is performed by symphony orchestras, choirs, dance companies, theaters, solo instrumentalists, and at institutions of higher learning and musical study.
