Composer of the Month January 2024: Aleksandra Vrebalov

Aleksandra VrebalovAleksandra Vrebalov’s music is characterized by a fusion of influences and traditions from Serbia, the United States and the Middle East. She is the 2024 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award Winner in Music for her composition ‘Missa Supratext’. Her works have been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the English National Ballet, Cincinnati and Glimmerglass Operas, Serbian National Theater, Belgrade Philharmonic, The Forbidden City Orchestra in Beijing and more. She has collaborated extensively with Kronos Quartet, writing 18 works for the group. A fellow of the MacDowell Colony, Rockefeller Bellagio Center, Djerassi, American Opera Projects, The Hermitage, and Tanglewood, Vrebalov is the recipient of The Harvard Fromm Commission, The American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Fellowship, Barlow Endowment Commission, and MAP Fund grant. A native of Serbia, she is the recipient of the Golden Badge of the Cultural and Educational Association of Serbia / Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a two-time winner of the Mokranjec Award and “Muzika Klasika” award. Vrebalov has made music with young refugees from Syria and Iraq at the Flying Carpet Festival on the Turkish/Syrian border in 2018 and 2019 and is a full-time professor of composition at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, Serbia. Her works are published by Composers Edition.
