When Arthur Goldman's novel Memoirs of a Geisha appeared in 1997, I read it with great pleasure and was intrigued by its description of a culture noted for its great delicacy and exquisite art. The invitation from director Rob Marshall to compose the score for his film version of the story conferred upon me an exciting opportunity and a daunting challenge.--Preface by composer.
