Inspired by folk tunes from Northwestern China, where the composer lived in the early 1970's. Unlike most Chinese folk music, that from this region is based on a seven-note scale, rather than on the pentatonic scale. Commissione by Chamber Music Soc. of Lincoln Center and David Shifrin.
