With an essay by Levon Hakobian and critical comments, in Russian and English. Facsimile plates. Shostakovich began work on this opera in 1927, and it premiered in 1930. Based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, the libretto was written by Shostakovich with Yevgeni Zamyatin, Georgy Ionin, and Alexander Preys. Text in Russian and transliteration. This edition is based on the 1981 Collected Works edition. The whereabouts of the manuscript piano score is unknown.
