Prepared by Mark F. Heiman and Laura Saxton Heiman. The first of a five-volume set devoted to a new edition of Child's collection of ballads. Child finished his collection in 1898. Child focused on the texts of the ballads, but the editors have included several music transcriptions as well. This volume contains ballads 1-53 of the total 305. With a preface to the new edition, advertisements, biography, and essay on ballad poetry.
