Zolotarev studied composition with Balakirev & Rimsky-Korsakov. He received the Rubinstein Prize for his cantata Paradise & Peri. He taught violin and composition and was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1955. He is thought to have continued the Russian national school of composition - broad diatonic melodies
